According to the World Bureau of Metal Statistics
(WBMS), the global output of refined copper in 2020
totaled 23.82 million metric tons, with a year-on-year
growth of 1.45%. The top five producers are China,
Chile, Japan, Russia, and U.S, together accounting
for 66.62% of the world’s total. Asia as a whole is a
dominant producer; and the Americas and Africa are the
main production areas for hydrometallurgy-produced
copper. China has been a major contributor to the
global growth in output in recent years, and its refined
copper production will remain at a high level in the
future. According to China Nonferrous Metals Industry
Association (CNMIA), in 2020, copper production in
China hit 10.03 million metric tons (or 10.02 million
metric tons according to WBMS), equaling 42.09% of
the world’s total.
increase to 4.67 million metric tons. This contrasted
with the export of refined copper in the same year,
which decrease by 32.92% to 212,300 metric tons.
According to WBMS, the global export volume in 2020
rose by 4.25% to 8.31 million metric tons. Top three
exporters were Chile, Russia, and Japan, together
accounting for 45.19% of the world’s total.
